Touted as one of the premiere rail-to-trail systems in the USA, the Mickelson Trail stretches 109 miles from Deadwood through the length of the Black Hills and down to Edgemont. The trail mainly uses the old Black Hills Railroad line that was built to supply the Homestake Mine in Deadwood. There are over 100 converted wooden bridges on the trail as well as 4 rock tunnels! The trail passes through beautiful scenery as it winds it’s way through the steeper terrain in the northern hills, through Hill City and past Crazy Horse to the limestone country that eventually leads out to the prairie. At each of the trails 15 trailheads is water, tables and parking, making this trail easily accessible and able to frequently refill your water supply on those hot summer days.
